Healthy Start Returns to Sandtown

Assistant Deputy Mayor, Jaynie McCulloh with Healthy Start's OB/GYN, Dr. Linda Whitby

A block party was held, in August 2007, to celebrate Healthy Start's return to the Carey Street location after a one-year absence. Over 100 families attended and community partners were there in force such as, Amerigroup, the Fire Department's Safety Van, the Penn-North Branch of the Pratt Library, the Lead Program, Healthy Start nurses, the Injury Free Coalition, and, more. The Baltimore All Stars Marching Band topped off the event.

Representing Mayor Sheila Dixon were Deputy Assistant Mayor, Jaynie McCulloh, and Nykidra Robinson, Neighborhood Liaison. Representing the Healthy Start Board were Mary Welcome, Esq. and William Freeman, Jr.!

Healthy Start Nurse Received National Award

Hazel Jones-Parker, MSN, CRNP, AACRNHazel Jones-Parker, MSN, CRNP, AACRN has received the 2007 Certified Nurse of the Year Award from the HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board, for exemplary excellence in HIV/AIDS Nursing. She received the award on November 8th at the Conference in Orlando Florida. Ms. Parker's dedication is evident in her coordination of HIV training for staff and the accommodation of HIV testing with clients as well as the extra hours she devotes as a volunteer to ensure services are seamless and available.

New Board Members

Patricia L. Welch - Patricia L. Welch is the Dean in the School of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University where she oversees the management of programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels. Pearl D. Holland - retired as the Director of Public Health Nursing for the Baltimore County Department of Health. She received her MPH from Johns Hopkins University and has held numerous positions as a Chief Nurse and in pediatric nursing. Rev., Dr. Cecil Conteen Gray - Pastor of Northwood-Appold United Methodist Church, is Co-Founder, President and Operator of the Northwood Appold Community Academy Charter School. Dr. Gray teaches in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Morgan State University and in the Department of Theology at Africa University (Zimbabwe). Full Article
